Music in three-dimensional space

Olaf Strassen is a Swiss music producer from Zurich who has been working with electronic music and the spatial design of sound since the late 1980s. His focus lies on exploring how music can be not only composed, but also experienced within space.

Together with audio engineer and 3D audio specialist Lasse Nipkow, he creates electronic music and immersive audio productions under the project name Silent Work. Their work is developed in the 3D Ambience Lab in Zollikon as well as in other studios in Zurich, combining electronic composition with modern audio technology.

A key project of this collaboration is the album Sonic Leaks, an elaborately produced immersive album realised in Dolby Atmos (9.1.6) and AURO-3D. The project’s executive producer is Patrick Schappert (GROBI TV), who has played a significant role in supporting both the production and the release.

Since 2017, Olaf Strassen has also been involved in Lasse Nipkow’s research on spatial audio perception, creating sonic demonstrations of psychoacoustic phenomena for Nipkow’s international seminar series. Nipkow presents this work worldwide in seminars and workshops on immersive audio technology.

In addition to their own projects, Strassen and Nipkow also create immersive audio productions for external artists and producers who wish to adapt their music to immersive formats, including internationally active and award-winning musicians.

His musical work moves between ambient, deep house, electronic pop and experimental soundscapes, combining electronic composition, sound design and spatial audio technology.
